Restoration

Restoration of a Jaguar XJ6 Series One by IJDC Member Paddy
Daly.
Chapter 1
About 10 years ago I purchased a 1973 XJ6 which had been found
abandoned in south county Dublin, next door to a cemetery, appropriately
enough. I had always been an admirer of the Series One and had reached
the point where it was now possible to restore one.
The
car was registered TIO 460 and was first taxed in Co.Kildare in
April 1973. At the time of purchase it had not been on the road
for a few years but was persuaded to start and was taken for a short
run on the road where the police promptly stopped me. However every
panel was rusting and it required full restoration.
The
left-hand side of the car was much the worst. The front wing was
badly holed and would need replacement. Acid from the battery had
eaten through the bulkhead and gave me a good view of the top of
the tyre, unwelcome but unusual all the same.
The outer sill was very weak and I could only guess at this
stage about the inner one. Both door skins were holed low down and
the rot extended to the frames. Further back the wheel arch was
gone and the petrol filler cap area was entirely missing.
Likewise
the lower lip of the rear wing was a mosaic of rust (Coventry lace?)
and to complete the picture the boot floor was holed and the rear
valance was as bad as expected! Yes, a long weekend's work was in
prospect !.
